All About Maggie May: My Interview on Smashwords

My Smashwords Interview

When did you first start writing?

When I was a child, I had trouble sleeping at bedtime, so to entertain myself, I created stories in my head. In high school, I took a Folklore and Mythology class and my teacher had us write ballads, myths, fables, and animal stories. That was the beginning of my experience as a writer. I went on to take creative writing classes in college along with several literature classes where I did a lot of reading, wrote a lot of essays, did a lot of comparing and contrasting, and ended up getting a master's degree in English.
When did you start writing erotica?

I started writing erotica later in my life. I am primarily a mystery writer and have published 14 mysteries under a different pen name. I have Smashwords to thank for helping me become an erotica writer since I read the erotic stories by other members of Smashwords Facebook groups and learned the words that erotic writers use to describe female and male genitalia in a sexy and arousing way. Before that, I could come up with titillating situations and characters for my erotic stories but didn't know how to write about body parts in a way that my readers wouldn't snicker at.
What is your latest published erotic romance?

My latest is entitled Hell on Wheels: A Sexy Western. It's told from the viewpoint of an 18-year-old girl who spent time and has lots of sexual experiences in the makeshift towns that the railroad built before the east coast and western trains met each other in Promontory Point Utah in the 1800s. I'm a train buff and love taking train trips. I'm fascinated with the building of the transcontinental railroad and have written two novels about it using another pen name. I wanted to try my hand in writing erotica starring the people who built the railroad and the prostitutes who travel with them. My erotic romance contains Male/Female/Male and Female/Male/Female threesomes. In it, I write about a compelling time in American history in a way that I hope my readers will find smokin' hot.
What are you working on now?

I'm going to be in an anthology in the summer called Down the Rabbit Hole that will include several of us writers reimaging the fairy tales we grew up reading. There will be Little Red Riding, Rapunzel, and Cinderella stories told like never before.
My group includes stories about Snow White. I was so excited about this anthology that I wrote and published a story that was meant to be included in it, so I had to write another one. The one I first wrote and published is called Naughty Snow White. In it, I write her story as an erotic romance. Naughty Snow White is anything but innocent. She steals her stepmother's diamond ring, hawks it, and then hitchhikes to San Francisco where she is taken in by seven gay dwarfs. As time goes on, she meets and falls in love with the grandson of a famous rock musician. To find out who that is, you'll have to read the erotic romance.
The Snow White Anthology will feature my new erotic story entitled Snow White and the Seven Firemen. In the erotic romance, Snow White's evil stepmother sets her house on fire with both Snow White and her father inside. Her father dies in the fire and she gets badly burned trying to save him. Saved by two firemen and now homeless, they invite her to live with them. She feels like she's died and gone to heaven when she sees how gorgeous her seven firemen roommates are. Which one of these handsome and sexy men will she choose to be her lover?

Hell on Wheels: A Sexy Western

I have a new Erotic Romance out today. Here's what it's about:

Told by a plucky 18-year-old spitfire, this sexy western is about her time spent with the men who built the transcontinental railroad and the prostitutes who traveled with them in rowdy makeshift towns nicknamed Hell on Wheels.

A coming of age story, humorous at times, it is about how she loses her innocence step-by-step and leaves behind her moral Mormon upbringing and eventually earns money writing erotic stories based upon what she sees when a prostitute in the camp brings customers back to their room.

Falling in love and lust with several men along the way, she meets a surveyor for the railroad who offers her a different life. Will she be able to leave behind what she has seen and experienced in the Hell on Wheels camps? And will one man be enough? Very sexually explicit and meant for adults only. Contains Male/Female and Female/Female erotica in addition to Female/Male/Female and Male/Female/Male threesomes.

Here are some sexy excerpts:

I sprawled out on a pew and thought, “Ooh…This is the life.”
Then I remembered that I was in a church, so I tried my best to pray.  I said aloud, “Lord, please forgive me for my sins.  I’m sorry that I enjoyed sex so much with those two men.”  After the words came out of my mouth, I was mortified.  What a whore I was turning out to be!
***
When the men wondered who I was, she’d tell them that I was a writer who wrote sexy stories for fancy New York newspapers, and I needed to watch them fornicate so I could take down notes.
Many of the men liked the idea of showing off in front of a spectator and enjoyed telling me, in very graphic details, what they liked about Lily’s body and how they were going to give her the best sex she’s ever had.

****

He helped me climb down from his buggy and we went inside.  He hollered out, “Timothy, we’re home,” and in walked the most gorgeous specimen of a man I’d ever seen.  He was holding a hammer and wasn’t wearing a shirt.  My eyes took in his rugged good looks and I admired his muscular chest that tapered down to his slim waist.  He was wearing fringed suede pants like the Indians wear.  His pants hung down low, exposing a sexy vee pattern of muscles that seemed to point down to his treasure below.  I wanted to pull down his pants to see more but behaved myself.

Writing Erotica

Decisions, decisions

Do you find it difficult to choose titles for your books?  I do.  A good title and book cover can make all the difference in the world.  I wrote an erotic romance a few months ago and it is not selling well.  The people who did review it had this to say about it:

"Author Maggie May has woven a compelling tale about a virgin, a paid escort, and a vampire who was once a slave. This novella is a fast paced short read that will keep the reader's interest through out sexual frustration, new experiences, possible love, drama and suspense .... it has it all!

I would definitely recommend this for any 18+ lover of romance with alternate twists."

That was one of my favorite all-time reviews.  Why isn't this book selling?  It may be because the competition is fierce and I should be happy that someone chose to buy it and review it, but I'm wondering what I can do to catch my potential readers' attention.

Starting with the title:  "The Killing Moon".  Hmmm...Maybe I made a bad decision when I came up with it.  Just because I love the song of the same title by an 80s group called Echo and the Bunnyman doesn't mean it's going to work for a story.

Here's the original cover:

The cover is very pretty and eerie, but doesn't look like an erotica book, does it? My main character does lose her virginity when a vampire visits her on a night with a blood moon, but maybe my readers want a picture of a hot vampire.

Here's the current cover.

I published a free excerpt of this book and it received over a hundred downloads; but when I charged 99 cents for it, away went the downloads.

The story ends with the four main characters going to a masquerade party where there is a red room.  All four of them are in the play room at the same time. Maybe the title should have something to do with masks.  Possible new title: "Who is the Man in the Mask?"

I'm glad that it's so easy to make changes in my books when dealing with Amazon, Google Play, and Smashwords.  I don't think a traditional publisher would be so patient with me.

A Sexy Ghost Story

Just in time for Halloween, here's an excerpt from my erotic romance about a modern-day California girl who moves to New Orleans and falls in love with a ghost who had once been a Creole musician who played in the brothels of Storyville at the end of the 1800s:

We kissed some more and he laid me down on the floor.  He knew how much I loved oral sex, so he went right to the business at hand.  I was almost on the cusp of an orgasm to begin with before he started licking my pussy.  By the time his tongue made a few rotations, I was a goner in about 5 seconds.  Way too fast, I know. But I didn’t care.  There will be others times together.  Won’t there?
He helped me off the floor and we sat on the sofa together.  “Jan,” I asked him, “remember when you said that someday you would play the piano for me?”
“Yes. Of course.”
“I have a piano,” I said, pointing across the room to it.
“Do you play?” he asked.
“A little.  Luckily, this apartment came completely furnished, including a piano.”
He walked over to it, sat on the bench, and told me, “I’ve written a song about you.”
“Really?  How wonderful!  What’s it called?”
“My Forever Love.”
“Oh, Jan.  How romantic.  Please play it for me.”
Before he started playing, I said, “Wait!  I want to record this so that I can savor it always.”  I propped my iPhone up with a book on my coffee table and hit “Record”.  Then, I looked intently at Jan sitting on the piano bench.  “Okay.  Play,” I directed him.
The notes he played were beautiful.  He was a wonderful musician and sounded a lot like Jelly Roll Morton. The song was slow, haunting, and sexy.  At first, I thought it was an instrumental, but half-way through, he added words.  His voice was low and sensuous and his words were heartbreaking: “She looked like something I wanted, but may be too fragile to touch.”
By the time it was over, tears were streaming down my cheeks.
He left the piano bench and came to me.  “Please don’t cry,” he told me and put his arm around me.
I nestled against him and said, “Please don’t go back to the cemetery tonight.  Don’t ever go back there again. Spend the night here.  I want to wake up in your arms.”
“I wish it was that simple.”
“But it is.  Just stay here.  We can live together like regular couples do.  We’ll cook breakfast, read the newspaper, walk in the park.  Doesn’t that sound lovely?”
“It really does, my love.  Who knows what will happen?  Maybe we’re shaking our fists at the gods right now.  You know, disrupting their plans for us.”
“Fuck them!” I boldly said.
He laughed and repeated what I said, “Yeah!  Fuck them!”
“I almost expect to be struck down by a bolt of lightning right now,” I told him.
“I know,” he said and laughed.
I led him to my bedroom.  “Make yourself at home,” I told him as I went off to brush my teeth and take off my makeup. I was determined to live like regular couples do.  I put on my “Hello Kitty” nightgown and climbed into bed next to him.
“I love your nightie,” he said.  “Very sexy.”
“Are you making fun of me?” I asked.
“No.  Not at all.  I do love it.  I’m glad you feel cozy with me.  We’ll lie here like an old married couple, give each other a short peck on the cheek, settle in to a spoon position, and drift off to dreamland together.
I snuggled up next to him and fell asleep instantly.
