Author Spotlight Shani Richards

Thank you, Shani, for joining us today on my blog. Here are a few questions for you:

Why did you want to write Ava In Chains?

I decided to write Ava In Chains because I was often given the advice, write the story you want to read. As a young black girl, I never read books about girls like me. I loved romance novels, but there was always this disappointment that came with realizing that the heroine wasn’t like me, and I felt that was wrong. Everyone should be able to see themselves in a story. I wanted Ava to be desirable, smart, pretty and talented. But I also wanted her to have self-doubt despite how hard she works at succeeding. I wanted her to be realistic. Most of all I wanted Ava to be relatable. And have agency. I was tired of reading books where things happened to or for the character for no reason related to who they were. I wanted to read a book where the character had a goal and worked to achieve it and by the end of the story, have that goal still matter. In Ava’s case, she wants to be a ballerina and choreographer. At the end of the story, she still is the same person, falling in love doesn’t change that.

Current Works in Progress?

I have several books that I’ve been working on but four that are close to being finished.

The Exploits of Isabella and Lone Wolfe is one of my darker works. It’s about a seemingly non-consensual relationship that takes place over 18 months. It was hard to write, because it came from a real encounter that ended differently, but shaped my feelings and understanding of con non-con situations.

Callie’s Strength (sequel to Sebastian’s Weakness) This is my baby project. I wrote Sebastian’s Weakness pretty quickly and forced myself to quickly publish it. I’ve taken more time with Callie’s part of the story, working on explaining why Sebastian’s actions were a huge part of her life. I also wanted to tell more about the relationship she has with other people. There are aspects of BDSM and D/s in both stories, but

Callie’s Strength focuses more on that.

This is how I disappear is more of a fantasy story. I really liked the idea of mythology, but hated that it never seemed to go beyond a few stories in each culture. So I explored the stories of Norwegian and Japanese legends and made those a part of who these modern characters. My mains, Katja “Kai” Cutter and Jace Cutter are mythical beings and they realize that just because they’re destined to be together doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy.

Saving Ivy is a spy story. I’d been working on this one for years, and the original version included some heavy themes, but no one really liked it (or I should say, certain aspects of it). So I took the parts of the story that everyone loved and wrote a new story from there. It still needs some retooling, but I think the concept works a lot better.

What influenced your writing style?

Reading influenced my writing style a lot actually. In so far as I fell in love with Shakespearean plays before I was old enough to even understand them. There was this idea that you could meet and fall in love with someone before you ever knew them and it was okay (mostly). That influenced me a lot. I wanted to write about an instant attraction, but then once the pixie dust wore off, I wanted to examine what was left.

In the case of Ava, a part of that Shakespearean influence is that she isn’t perfect, no matter how much Milo builds her up to be. And Milo thinks she’s perfect within seconds of seeing her, much like a love-struck Romeo. There’s a nod to this in the fact that the first time they meet, she’s performing as Juliet in a ballet. When we meet Ava, she’s practicing, because even though she’s the lead, she can always be better.  I wanted her to have self-doubt, even while succeeding in most things, I wanted her to question herself and her relationships and her place in it. My goal was to write Ava as realistically as possible. She’s a ballerina, but that doesn’t mean she won’t slip and fall or trip over her feet. I wanted the audience to get inside of her head and see that she’s dedicated and strong and appears fearless even when she’s terrified. I wanted the reader to see that she struggles and doesn’t have the world handed to her, that she works for her progress. I wanted Ava to be relatable to anyone.

I love erotica, but one of my ‘complaints’ is that sometimes it seems like the story is sacrificed for the sex. I wanted to change that. I really wanted to write a story, that just so happened to be erotic at the same time. That’s how most of my stories go if they have a sex scene on page 3 or page 100 that’s the progression of the story.

Why did you start writing Erotica?

I started writing it for two reasons. One, I really wanted to branch out and write something crazy that I could never say aloud. Writing was easy, it was safe and getting those words typed out was a release for me. And two, I was tired of reading all the same types of stories. I wanted something more than just a sex story. I wanted intrigue and thoughtfulness and lust that was built on love, not the other way around. I wanted characters that were developed and that you would miss and think about long after the story finished. I wanted my readers to go “oh, that was a great book and freaking hot!”

Have you ever dealt with a stalker because of your work?

No, I haven’t. However, funny story, for some of the details in The Lone Wolfe and Belle I sort of stalked a minor internet celebrity to figure out his story. I felt bad about it afterward, but at that time, I really wanted to figure him out. He was a fun mystery, and once I solved it, I was done with him.

How did you pick your pen name?

I published because I promised my mom I would. So I choose my pen name to honor her in a way. It’s my initials S.L. backward and her last name. That became Ellis Lightfoot. After I picked it and published my first book the first copy was bought by a woman who shared my mother’s first name. It was the best sign that I was doing the right thing.

Do you have any final thoughts?

I’m so happy to be able to say I published my second book. I’m not a bestseller by any means, but I did something I only dreamt about for years. I’m hoping that someday I’ll be more widely read, but even if it never happens, I’ll probably never stop writing.

Thanks for joining us on my blog today, Mystqx!

Here are some questions for you:

As a writer/lover of words, would you be able to describe yourself in just 2 words and why the chosen word.

Answer: Free Spirit. I love freedom in all its sense. The freedom to feel, act, write, do whatever my heart desires, free from the influence and negativity of other people - it is a wish I desire to fulfill everyday, to live and not just be alive.

This is your first published poetry book and I heard that there are some secrets in the pages. What does the title actually mean? How do you select the title of the poems?

Answer: Bared – Beneath a Myriad of Skies implies baring one’s soul. The cover image tells a lot about it too. It’s a woman consoling herself as she tries to bare her soul. The mandala tattooed on her skin is a reflection of her memories, hopes, dreams, passion, rage, frustration, longing, healing – her depths. The subtitle “Beneath A Myriad of Skies” denotes the different times and places that has witnessed my confessions. Some writings in my poetry book are writings I wrote 20 years ago and somewhen during that time, the skies are bluer than blue, or shadier than shades of gray. The images that goes with the writings are special places where I have been and where I have written some of the prose or poetry. The titles of my poems are either the essence of the poem or the message hidden in the writings.

So after finding out that there are actually secret messages written in between words and pages, why did you write it? Are you ready to tell us some of the secrets?

Answer: Some of the writings you will read in the book are from memories. I am looking for the “half-owner” of those memories – in the hopes that I will be found and in this lifetime.

What is your writing process like?

Answer: A word. I need a word to start with anything and then my writings flow from there. Usually I write things first on paper as I love the feel of paper and pen. Then a phrase composed with that word builds up the direction of where and how I will write. Music and food sets my mood before I start caressing my notes and pressing those letters on my keyboard.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?

Answer: Dipping your pen in so many inks. It can be overwhelming to write about so many things. You accumulate drafts after drafts and by the time you know it you are caught in a web of chaos.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

Answer: When I can’t find it in myself to connect with what I want to write – then I feel empty. Imagination works fine – I can write what I can imagine but it would be just descriptive and it takes too much energy to make it sound real and relatable. Words after words are written but the emotions doesn’t flow in it.

What is the hardest thing for you to write?

Answer: Digging deep into the recesses of one’s heart and mind may be sad, scary and at times emotionally draining but to write about is rewarding because somehow I could find a relief of heart.  I can write the story in shades or color coat it however I want, but the hardest thing to write is the naked truth of a certain matter because there is no absolute truth.

I know this is a question usually asked to writers, but in any case I am curious to know – how do you fight writers block?

Answer: I don’t fight it but I go with the flow. There is really no proper cure for this. but I find emptying your mind works like rebooting. Take a walk outside, go to a cafe, hang around and do nothing, take a long warm bath, activities that don't require serious thinking helps like magic. I really stop doing anything that has to do with writing and take a break to refresh my mind.

What kind of writer are you?

Answer: Free rein. Although I have a central plot, I write in the direction of where the flow of ideas take me.

What is the most important thing about a book in your opinion?

Answer: The choice of words that connects the book with the target reader. It should be able to capture the senses of the readers.

Where do you get your inspiration to write?

Answer:  Feeling, seeing, reading, hearing emotions in its purest state – raw emotion - inspires me to write, so I look for those in nature, in strangers, real life situations like watching kids. You can find the most honest reactions most of the time in kid’s faces.

Any projects in line?

Answer: Currently I am working on finishing 2 books. A non-fiction book about the negative stereotypes in society and the other one is a mystery romance novel.

Tell us a little about your background. How did you start writing?

Well, I've been an avid reader my entire life, and I've been writing on and off since high school. I started reading erotic romance books after I had my first kid and I was introduced to a whole new experience of reading that I fell in love with. And then a few years ago, after my second kid was born, I decided to get back into writing again. I knew I had what it took to write great stories because there was a spark lit inside me that could only come out in writing.

I read and enjoyed the first book in the Construction of the Heart Series. Here's my review.

Lots of sex in this story that has likable characters, from the narrator to her new boyfriend, and her caring roommates. There’s a little mystery thrown to keep you wondering, “Who is the person following her in the black car?” I enjoyed the descriptions of her night out with her girlfriend, the meals she cooked, and the clothes she and her friends wore. I could see it all in my mind’s eye. All and all, a good story with excellent descriptions of smokin’ hot sex with her chocolate stallion. Lucky lady.

What made you decide to write interracial erotic romance stories?

Most of my books are interracial erotic romance stories, and that's because I'm extremely passionate about interracial love. It's my life. I'm married to a black man. We met 18 1/2 years ago and became friends, and then we started dating 16 1/2 years ago. And we just celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. We have two beautiful children as a result of our love. But I've experienced some racism and hatred because of who I fell in love with, but it's just made me more passionate and knowledgeable about what I write. And it allows me to spread the message that love is love.
My interracial books are either about a black man and a white woman, a black woman and a white man, a biracial man and a white woman, or a biracial woman and a white man.

But I also write about Caucasian couples.
I love interracial couples, but I try to grab all readers of romance by not limiting myself to just that.
Construction of the Heart Series (3 books, Construction of the Heart, Sealing of the Heart, Expansion of the Heart) is interracial (a biracial man and a white woman). My 4th book, One Night: Two Strangers, is about a Caucasian couple. My 5th book, The Live In: Him Her and Her, is interracial (a married Caucasian couple and the wife's best friend, a beautiful black woman). And the book I'm working on right now, my 6th book, is about a Caucasian couple. My 7th book will be about a black man and a white woman. And my 8th book will be about a white man and a biracial woman.
But I don't dwell on skin colors, I bring their love out for one another. Love is love!
I write from my experiences in life, which I've had from dating both white men and black men, and because I've lived in a few different states and worked in several cities. I'm someone that definitely has lived her life. I've embraced the times when I've been single and lived my life to the absolute fullest. And I've embraced my relationships and taken the good and the bad from them. I also write from experiences that I've seen from friends and family. Plus, I write from experiences that come from reading and watching movies or television shows. Love in all forms is everywhere if you're open to it.

How have your fans reacted to your writing about sex? Have you ever had a stalker or men who’ve sent you pornography?

I haven't been stalked or received dick pics yet, but I get men and the occasional woman trying to flirt me a lot. I've gotten people messaging me their phone numbers and sometimes people ask me if I want to see their pics. I've also been asked if I will share my pics. I guess it comes with the genre of books that I write. But I just ignore it all and delete the comments and messages.

What are your plans for your next novel?

I'm currently writing my 6th book and it's my 3rd standalone book as my first 3 books are a series. I have the title but I'm not disclosing that information yet. I don't disclose the character names until I'm closer to publishing as well. But here's a peek at what this erotic romance novel has in store: 1) extremely troubled childhoods 2) lots of money, maybe bigger debts 3) a pimp 4) a proposition 5) 3 three weeks that change her life. I've just started writing this love story and I'm hoping to have it finished by the summer, hopefully in June.

Michael is a scrawny kid from Ohio who moves to San Francisco with his boyfriend Kenny. He loves everything about the city, except the guy he's with. When things turn ugly, how will he escape and how will he survive on his own, completely alone in the big city?

Along the way, he meets an eccentric cast of characters in his own personal Oz. Sometimes, you only get one shot.

Here's my 5 Star Review:

Applause!
I really enjoyed this true, coming-of-age story about how a scrawny kid who was bullied and called a sissy in school leaves behind his home in Ohio and moves to San Francisco where he feels at home in the gay community and eventually becomes a popular stripper who dances to songs by Lady Gaga. After finishing the book, I watched a music video of her song "Applause", Matt's song of choice in his early career, and imagined what he might look like dancing to it. I'm sure he put on a great show.

 Excerpt

As he walked into the house, he was immediately surrounded by the tantalizing aroma of something cooking. He set down the bag and followed Jenny into the kitchen. The first thing he noticed was the table, set for two, a pretty bouquet of field flowers arranged in a Mason jar in the center.
He looked to Jenny, who was carefully watching his reaction. “What’s going on here?” He smiled encouragingly. “And what smells so good?”
Jenny used a folded kitchen towel to remove something from the oven and set it on the stove. Cole peered into the dish, where golden chicken breasts sizzled in a thin sauce.
“That looks amazing, Jenny. What is it?”
Her board was lying facedown on the counter. She picked it up and showed him what she’d already written on the other side. Chicken piccata.
“Chicken piccata? I had all the stuff to make that?”
Jenny nodded proudly.
Cole squinted, looking more closely at the dish. “What are the little burned peas-looking things?”
Jenny rolled her eyes. She jotted on her board. Capers.
“I had capers? Where the hell did I get capers?”
She shrugged and hooked a thumb at one of the upper cupboards.
“Oh, it must have been in that basket one of my clients gave me for Christmas.” Cole shook his head. “All sorts of fancy shit— I mean stuff.” He looked at Jenny. “Sorry about that.”
Jenny grinned, then jotted quickly, You can say shit. I’m a big girl. She laughed lightly.
Cole laughed, too. “Good. Well, shit! Yeah, that feels good.”
Waving with her hand, Jenny gestured toward the table.
“Is dinner ready?” Cole asked, and she nodded.
“Alright, let me go wash up and I’ll be right back.”
Cole headed upstairs. As he washed his hands, he wondered about how Jenny had created such a dish with the simple things he kept at the house. She seemed pleased with herself, too. Quite a difference in her from the first time he’d seen her in the back of the horse trailer.
He sighed to himself. They were making progress, and he found that gratifying. Would it be possible that one day she’d decide to talk to him?
When he returned downstairs, the chicken was arranged on a platter. Jenny had placed a bowl of salad on the table, along with a bowl of rice. She’d poured Dr. Pepper for herself, while at his place she’d set out a bottle of Heineken.
“I know this is the fanciest dinner this table has seen in years,” Cole said, sitting in his chair. “We have a centerpiece and everything. You picked these?”
Pleased, Jenny nodded as she took her seat.
“They’re beautiful. The purple ones match your dress and everything.” He smiled at her. “You look pretty tonight.”
Jenny blushed profusely and looked down at her plate, trying to suppress a smile.
“Let’s dig into this fine dinner, what do you say?”
She nodded, and Cole took the platter, serving her first, then himself. They passed the rice and the salad as well. Cole took a bite of chicken and closed his eyes, savoring the flavor. When he opened his eyes again, she was watching him carefully.
“Oh my God, Jenny, this is the best thing I’ve ever tasted. How did you know how to make this?”
Jenny’s smile faded a bit and she hesitated. Then she jotted on her board. It’s a long story.
Cole regarded her thoughtfully. “Maybe you can tell me sometime.”
She chewed her lower lip. Maybe.
They ate in awkward silence for a few minutes, and Cole silently cursed himself for stepping into something that made Jenny uncomfortable. Wishing to restore their easy rapport, he cleared his throat.
“I know. You’re an undercover chef.”
She gave him a sideways glance and snorted.
Encouraged, he tried again. “You’re a secret chef, and you’re on a mission to educate dumb cowboys like me in the ways of international cuisine.” He drew out the last two words in an exaggerated drawl.
Jenny giggled, tossing her napkin at him.
Cole grinned good-naturedly. “It really is good, Jenny, no lie. Thank you for making dinner.”
After dinner dishes were cleared, Cole remembered the bag he’d left by the door. “Oh, Jenny, I almost forgot. I have a surprise for you.” He reached out his hand. “Come see.”
Her eyes widened, but she took his hand. He led her to the den and pointed at the couch. “Have a seat and close your eyes.”
She hesitated a moment, then sat down. She glanced up at Cole.
“Close’em.”
Pursing her lips, she complied, knee bobbing anxiously. Cole retrieved the bag and placed it on Jenny’s lap. “Okay, now you can open them.”
With a glance at Cole, Jenny peered into the bag. Brow knit in a frown, she withdrew a large brown cardboard box and set the bag on the floor. Eyeing him again, she lifted the lid and gasped.
Cole couldn’t stop the smile as Jenny picked up first one boot, then the other, eyes wide. Reverently, she ran her fingers across the purple embroidery.
“I figured, if you’re going to be working in the barn, you’re going to need some good boots. I saw these at the saddle shop and I knew they were supposed to be yours.”
She looked up at him as a smile spread across her face. Standing, she let the box fall to the floor as she came to him, a boot in either hand, and wrapped him in a hug.
“Do you like them?” Cole laughed.
Jenny stepped back and nodded vigorously. Then she pointed up the stairs.
“You want to try them on?”
She nodded again. Gathering up the box, the lid, and the bag, she hurried upstairs. From where he stood, Cole heard her moving around, drawers opening, the creak of her bed. Then came the clomp of boots on the hardwood floor as she came back downstairs, her face beaming.
She crossed to him, then back to the bottom of the stairs like a fashion model on a catwalk, rocking the new boots with her dress.
Cole couldn’t stop his grin. “How do they feel? Do they fit?”
Jenny nodded happily.
“Okay, then. Wanna go help me out in the barn?”
She nodded again, taking his arm as they headed out the door and across the yard. Every few steps, she looked down at the boots. Cole couldn’t remember ever feeling so pleased with himself.
The horses were waiting near the gate as they approached. Cole opened it, and he and Jenny watched them make a beeline for the barn. He looked at her. “You do the feed and I’ll do the hay?” he asked.
She nodded, heading for the buckets and feed cans at the end of the barn. As Cole lugged a bale of hay into the first stall, he started singing a cowboy song about not being buried on the lone prairie. When Jenny smirked at him, he winked and continued with more gusto.
By the time the horses were in their stalls with buckets of feed and fresh hay, Cole had started the song over, and Jenny was grinning broadly and shaking her head.
“What? Does my singing suck?” he asked.
She shook her head. No, it’s very brave, she jotted on her board.
“Brave?” he laughed. “That’s what they tell people who can’t sing.”
He took Jenny’s hand and twirled her around as he sang, pulling her to himself and launching into an impromptu waltz down the center of the barn.
Cole relished her giggles as he spun them both around, drawing out the final note. Breathless, they stopped, Jenny smiling up at him, her emerald eyes wide. Cole’s gaze drifted to her lips, pillowy and soft, no trace of the trauma that had once been there. He felt an almost irresistible pull, as though a magnet drew his lips to hers, but he blinked hard and spun her one last time before letting go.
“Who knew those were dancing boots?” he joked softly. When he looked back at her, he saw a glint of sadness in her eyes. She’d felt the same pull he had. But he knew he couldn’t take advantage of her. That wasn’t who Cole Caldwell was.

Who doesn't love reading about sex and romance from a male point of view?

JC Winchester is a fellow member of the Wicked Pens. He has been writing erotica since 2003 and discovered a choose-your-own adventure erotic story site, Chyoo. He enjoyed the challenge of adding onto other’s stories, blending his own voice in with theirs. But before too long he was called to serve his country and put down the pen. Nearly a decade later an old friend challenged him to join a Survivor themed writing contest on Literotica. It sparked his muse and before he knew it the stories were rapidly flowing, helping him to place 4th that year. Since then he has slowed down his pace to focus on combining his love of the outdoors and for writing.

He came to my attention when he submitted a story to a writing contest.  It is called Cop Next Door.  Before I read it, I assumed that the cop was a male; so it was a very pleasant surprise to read that the cop is female and she's pregnant.  He'd been admiring her from afar since he met her, but she was married.  Now, she is separated.  I love the tenderness and sensitivity of the story and I highly recommend it.

Let's hear it for the boys, ladies.  Who doesn't love reading about sex and romance
from a male point of view?

Every Wednesday, I'll be focusing on a male erotica writer whose works I've read and enjoyed.

This week, I'm focusing on J.f. Silver's 3 erotic romances about the happily-married couple, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Average.  You'll find out that their sex life is anything but average--it's smokin' hot, as a matter of fact. Let's hear it for sexy, long-lasting marriages!!

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Average:

Can sex really get better with age? For Joe and Elaine, an average couple married a long time, the answer is definitely yes! After thirty years together they begin experimenting with others and discover a whole new world of pleasure. An unexpected three-way leaves them curious and wanting more. When Elaine suggests a search for playmates, they meet John and his sexy Asian wife, Mika. Sparks ignite from the start for the women and two lucky husbands get to come along for the ride. Things get hotter with each visit and as fantasies are fulfilled, the couples become much more than just friends, proving that age is just a number.

My Review:
After reading this delightful story, I could see why it has so many 5 star reviews. What attracted me was the way that Joe and Elaine were just regular middle-aged people who just happened to have an extraordinarily good sex life. I liked how the Joe deferred to what Elaine wanted and how having other partners was her idea. It showed a lot of respect for women and judging from the sex of J. F.'s reviewers here on Goodreads, women really, really like him. Let's here it for sexy marriages! Rock on, J.F.

Nothing Grey About Fifty:

Just how close can two happily married couples become? Joe and Elaine, along with their “friends with benefits,” Mika and John, return for the second helping of “Mr. and Mrs. Average Joe.” Away from the bedroom, the four souls share mutual pleasures while discovering new and exciting passions. Another fantasy is fulfilled when a night out results in a sexy surprise reunion with a very special friend. But things really heat up as the couples begin celebrating birthdays together. Age is just a number but hitting the half century mark has never been hotter than this.

My Review:
I'm in the mood for strawberries, whipped cream and a stripper pole after reading this 2d book of the fun and sexy chronicles of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Average. Keep them cummin', J.F. Silver.

New Temptations:

My Review:
Another hit from J.f. Silver. This is an erotic story about Mr. and Mrs. Joe Average and their best friends (with benefits) who travel to San Francisco and Napa County for business and pleasure. Their wives Mika and Elaine are successful erotica writers who are on a book tour this trip. Money is no object for this foursome because the book sales have been astronomical. (Every writers' dream, including mine). Diamonds are bought as gifts, the best wines are tasted, and there's more than enough money to go to sex clubs in San Francisco and expensive restaurants, leaving big tips behind at both. The sex scenes are very hot and there's a bit of a mystery at the end of the story about what Mika will be given as a birthday present. I'm not telling you what is it. You'll have to read the book to find out.
